J.T. Cooper talks ‘Blackhawk Down: The Untold Story’

Nashville singer/songwriter shares firsthand account on Fastline Fast Track Episode 11, presented by Case IH

Buckner, KY, USA – WEBWIRE

“We weren’t Supermen. We weren’t cartoon characters. We knew when we left that gate (from the Army compound) there was a good chance that we weren’t going to come home, but those guys were American soldiers. Those guys had on the same uniforms we did, and I may not have known any of the names, personally, of one guy that was in that helicopter that got shot down, but I knew that it was an American soldier, and I knew that it was my job to go and get him.”

Nashville singer-songwriter J.T. Cooper, who was a member of the 10th Mountain Division of the U.S. Army in Mogadishu, Somalia, in 1993, recounted his experience on Episode 11 of the Fastline Fast Track, presented by Case IH.

Cooper, who grew up on a poultry farm in East Tennessee, is featured in the new documentary “Blackhawk Down: The Untold Story.” He was among the first to respond when Army Rangers were shot down in Mogadishu. The harrowing Battle of Mogadishu captivated the nation’s attention and became the basis for the Hollywood feature film, “Blackhawk Down.”

The new documentary was made by retired Air Force Col. Randall Larsen, who also served in the U.S. Army during his 32-year military career. The documentary can be purchased at Walmart stores nationwide, or on Amazon.com. Cooper was interviewed for the documentary and has a song featured among bonus materials.

“We weren’t Supermen. We weren’t cartoon characters,” Cooper said. “We knew when we left that gate (from the Army compound) there was a good chance that we weren’t going to come home, but those guys were American soldiers. Those guys had on the same uniforms we did, and I may not have known any of the names, personally, of one guy that was in that helicopter that got shot down, but I knew that it was an American soldier, and I knew that it was my job to go and get him.”

Cooper also talks about his personal experience with PTSD and his work with Operation Song. He regularly participates in songwriting retreats and writing camps to help returning military veterans express their feelings through song. Following the interview at the Ernest Tubb Record Shop in Nashville, Tennessee, Cooper played songs he had written about his experiences and songs he had written with a soldier and with daughters of a soldier who was killed in action.

“That’s more important to me than when I have a song on the radio,” Cooper said. “When that guy calls me and says ‘Hey, man, your song helped me get out of bed today,’ I may have helped save a life. I don’t know how many No. 1 hits have helped save a life, but I know that I’ve touched people, and that’s real.”

Also on Episode 11, host Brent Adams talks about Certified Pre-Owned equipment and high-horsepower tractors with Tracy Sagan and Bill Weber of worldwide agriculture equipment manufacturer and presenting sponsor, Case IH.
