This book is about the plight of the polar bear. The polar bear is an endangered species that is threatened by climate change caused by global warming. The polar bear is unable to sit and hunt for food on the ice shelf and therefore cannot catch enough prey to survive.  The Arctic Ocean is warming up and there is less ice to support the polar bear population.

The polar bears’ native range lies largely within the Arctic Circle encompassing the Arctic Ocean, its surrounding seas and surrounding land masses. Its preferred habitat is the annual sea ice covering the waters over the continental shelf and the Arctic inter-island archipelagos. The Arctic is home to millions of seals, which become prey when they surface in holes in the ice in order to breathe, or when they haul out on the ice to rest. Polar bears hunt primarily at the interface between ice, water, and air; they only rarely catch seals on land or in open water making ice glaciers an integral part of their survival.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) latest reports an estimate of 26,000 of these species. Adult males normally weigh 350 to more than 600 kilograms (775 to more than 1,300 pounds). Adult females are smaller, normally weighing 150 to 295 kilograms (330 to 650 pounds). Courtship and mating take place on the sea ice in April and May, when polar bears congregate in the best seal hunting areas. Its diet primarily consists of ringed and bearded seals. Annual ice contains areas of water that appear and disappear throughout the year as the weather changes. Seals migrate in response to these changes, and polar bears must follow their prey. It forces polar bears to go onto land and wait through the months until the next freeze-up.

The book, “Polar Bear: An Endangered Species,” is scheduled to display at the upcoming Canada’s most renowned literary fair, The Word on the Street Book Fair on September 22, 2019 in Toronto, Ontario Canada.
