Veronika Weber has received the award of the German meat magazines ‘afz – allgemeine fleischer zeitung’ and ‘Fleischwirtschaft’ which has been awarded for the 7th time. The 25-year-old veterinarian works for Vion in Germany as Group Quality Manager. The award is given to three young people for their talent and special motivation each year. The ceremony took place at the IFFA 2019, the leading international trade fair for the meat industry, in Frankfurt am Main.

Veronika Weber considers her job as her mission to actively contribute to the protection of animals at the slaughterhouse. She receives the award ‘Förderpreis der Fleischwirtschaft 2019’ for her previous commitment and her ‘vision with role model function’. The prize was awarded at the Meat Vision Gala on Saturday night in the framework of the IFFA trade fair.

‘My vision is to combine the interests of the management with the – sometimes also ethical – concerns of animal welfare and consumer protection. Food of animal origin can only be produced with the utmost respect for the animal,’ said Veronika Weber after the award ceremony.

During her studies of veterinary medicine at Munich Ludwig Maximilian University, she completed an internship at Vion slaughterhouse in Waldkraiburg. To that point of time, the young lady already decided to focus on animal welfare and food safety in her future career. This desire was furthermore intensified during a practical year in the USA at Texas A&M University. Subsequently, she participated in a trainee program in the department central quality management at Vion Germany.

Today the Group Quality Manager for animal welfare works for all cattle and pig slaughterhouses of Vion located in Germany. Her work includes the optimization of all processes in which living animals are involved. This includes, for example, conducting internal audits and animal welfare training.

Parallel to her ongoing daily work, Veronika Weber is writing her dissertation at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover. Her thesis shows the impact of bovine hides contamination on microbiological quality of carcasses subject to the condition of an in line slaughtering process.
