Senior roads project director joins Arup

One of Australia’s most experienced roads engineers, Barry Hancock, has joined Arup to work on the design and delivery of critical, high value infrastructure projects. 

With 35 years’ experience on major roads and highways projects in Australia and the UK, Barry’s expertise incorporates transport planning, project definition, concept design development and detailed design management.

His experience extends to economic analysis and life cycle costing, constructability assessments, risk management systems and processes, as well as value management and value engineering on complex high profile projects.

He led teams for the $2,000m Pacific Highway Upgrade from Woolgoolga to Ballina Portion A, the 48km motorway from Glenugie to Maclean, and the $100m Tourle Street to Kooragang Island project in Newcastle. 

He was Concept Design Manager for the Woolgoolga to Ballina Planning Alliance and the route selection phase of the Coffs Harbour Bypass Planning project.

Recently, Barry worked client-side as Project Engineer at Gatwick Airport with the Airfield Development team. He developed and designed procurement of airfield taxiway upgrades and rehabilitation projects totalling £30m, meeting aviation compliance requirements, facilitating broad stakeholder engagement as well as governance and approval processes.

Barry is a Fellow of Engineers Australia and was named EA Newcastle Division Professional Engineer of the Year in 2017. He has previously held honorary positions on Engineers Australia committees in Newcastle, notably as Chair of the College of Leadership and Management committee from 2013 to 2016.
