“A cancer survivor inspires readers to live their second chance to the fullest.”

In her first book “27 Miles: The Tank’s Journey Home,” Lisabeth Mackall detailed her husband’s recovery following a car crash and subsequent severe brain injury. In her new book “Dying to Live Your Life: Why Does It Take Facing Death to Live Your Best Life?” (ReadersMagnet; 2019), she talked about a second devastating life trauma: breast cancer.

For a woman who had already fought enough, breast cancer is unexpected bad news. She thought she and her husband had already fought the hardest of battles but soon realized her own battle – her own brush with death – was about to start.

But instead of resigning herself to grief, the author embarked on a new journey of forging ahead under trying circumstances. And having developed a love for writing and sharing her journey with others during her husband’s recuperation, she wrote “Dying to Live Your Life” as a cathartic way to heal. For the author, breast cancer is a journey of self-learning and pain, which provides her the opportunity to re-examine her life.

“Being diagnosed with breast cancer makes you re-evaluate everything in your life, from what your priorities are, to what you eat every day,” the author said. “When I started assessing my life, I realized that it isn’t going to be chemo that saves my life, it is going to be me that saves my life.”

“Dying to Live Your Life” is a memoir written in the form of a journal. In it, the author gives readers a walk-through of the treatment for breast cancer and takes them into her mind, that of a cancer victim and survivor. She even talks about her breast surgery, among the many surgeries she went through.

“I will never say that life was easy, that cancer was easy, but I will say that I have learned more in this time that I have in the last 10 years of my life,” said the author. “Paying attention to my own feelings and heart gave me the gift of insight into a world that I would never had known unless I was diagnosed with cancer.

“Cancer was a gift, and one that I will not take for granted.”
