“Surprising and strange,” said one of the book publishing industry’s most trusted book review publications.

Brightly colored illustrations and a suspense that leads somewhere unexpected!

The children’s book “The Helium Egg” (PRGott Books Publishing; 2010) continues to make the rounds at various national and international book events. Written by E. Dorinda Shelley and illustrated by Eleanor A. Hutton, this boldly colorful picture book tells a fun suspenseful story of farm animals that witness a strange phenomenon in their barn.

Shelley intends “The Helium Egg,” which is the second book in The Helium Book series, to spark the imagination of children and extol the benefits of working together.

Aimee Jodoin of Foreword Reviews recently reviewed “The Helium Egg,” giving it 3 out of 5. She praised the children’s book for its suspense, which she said “leads somewhere unexpected.”

Suspense builds over the course of the book at an exciting pace. Though the curious properties of the egg are never explained—except to imply that’s simply what baby ghost eggs are like—the egg’s increasingly strange behavior and growing size keep the pages turning.

She also added, “All of the characters function to build suspense, as more and more animals work to protect the egg as it continues to grow and float faster.”

Jodoin also remarked on “The Helium Egg’s” brightly colored illustrations—and the unusually colored characters did not escape her notice. (“The book’s illustrations are brightly colored, with pink cats, a red horse, and green and orange ducks, and are entertaining and interesting to look at.”) And though she found the book’s theme unclear, the cooperation between the farm animals is nevertheless “endearing.”

About the Author

Dr. Shelley is a retired dermatologist. She grew up in Missouri, spending weekends on a farm with friendly horses. She, her husband, and three children lived for many years on a “farmette” in NW Ohio, surrounded by many of the animals in the Helium Books. This is the second in a series of books she has written and Eleanor Hutton has illustrated.
