DB brings rail travel of the future to this year’s CEBIT

The CEBIT2018 trade fair will start in Hanover tomorrow, and Deutsche Bahn will be there to present new digital services designed to make rail travel even more appealing following their launch over the summer. The company will explain how artificial intelligence and blockchain can be used for train services and so benefit rail customers.

Komfort Check-in makes rail travel even more relaxing. ICE passengers can use this new feature in the DB Navigator app to check in when they board their train and then get on with relaxing, working, watching a movie, or sleeping without having to worry about interruptions. CEBIT visitors can try the new feature out and see what rail connections will initially offer the Komfort Check-in option.

What will tomorrow’s commuters want from regional trains? DB has taken customers’ answers to this question and put them into action in the Train of Ideas. Quiet zones, gaming modules, mobile workstations, a gym with a digital fitness trainer, and a whole host of other innovations await visitors when they step onto the regional train of the future and use a VR headset to explore each of its compartments.

DB’s stand will also showcase Germany’s first light-emitting platform: Before a train arrives, it shows where the doors will be located and where empty seats are available. Developed by DB’s start-up partner SIUT, this feature is already providing passengers with orientation at an S-Bahn station in Stuttgart.

Sensors and connectivity make predictive maintenance possible for a growing number of rail facilities. The station clock at the DB stand is a digital timepiece. Thanks to IoT and LoRaWAN technology, the synchronization and upkeep of some 12,000 station clocks can now be performed remotely.

By digitalizing the entire rail network, DB plans to create the capacity for thousands of additional trains every day without the need for new tracks. At 2:30pm on June 14, Prof. Sabina Jeschke, Board Member for Digitalization and Technology, will give a keynote speech called “Trains with brains: The use of artificial intelligence at DB”, providing details about the project “Digital Rail for Germany” and the technology it deploys.
