California Residents Advised of Health and Safety Concerns Following Flood Damage to Properties

LA Testing offers indoor environmental quality (IEQ) testing services, sampling supplies, inspection tools and test kits to help identify microbial and chemical contaminants following floods in California.

Huntington Beach, CA – WEBWIRE

In late February, California’s Governor Gavin Newsom issued a proclamation of a state of emergency for a number of counties across the state. The proclamation was made to help communities respond to massive flooding that has caused widespread damage.

One of the hardest hit communities is Guerneville. According to reports, the Russian River rose at least 45 feet causing extensive flooding throughout the town. Some 2,000 homes and buildings are believed to have suffered varying degrees of water damage.

As the water recedes over time, property owners and tenants are faced with cleaning up the mess and filing insurance claims. This is also an important time for residents of flooded communities to recognize that many buildings that were damaged by floodwaters likely now pose health concerns for any building occupants and especially those tasked with cleanup and repair duties. Any standing water and wet materials are a breeding ground for microorganisms, including everything from viruses and bacteria to mold. These organisms can be on surfaces and penetrate deep into soaked, porous materials. Floodwaters often also contain chemical contaminants such as fuels, fertilizers and industrial chemicals.

“Many of these contaminants can be a skin contact hazard or can become airborne and create indoor air quality issues and immediate health concerns,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “LA Testing is available to help residents determine if their home or property is safe from both chemical and biological contaminants through environmental testing. With multiple laboratories in California, we offer laboratory services for mold, bacteria, lead-based paints, asbestos, and a wide range of chemical contaminants. LA Testing provides all of the sampling supplies, has easy to use test kits, and carries a line of building inspection tools and personal protective equipment.”

LA Testing has also sponsored an educational video about flood cleanup and indoor air quality (IAQ) that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/3Q1tnHFkPF0.
