David and Beverly Sedlacek discuss addictions in their Christian living book

In their effort to help people find emotional healing and become restored to communion and fellowship with God and with one another, David and Beverly Sedlacek published a new edition of their book “Cleansing the Sanctuary of the Heart: Tools for Emotional Healing” (ReadersMagnet; 2018), wherein they incorporate their newly acquired knowledge on the field of neuroscience and new thinking and practices on forgiveness.
 
The Sedlaceks deliver an exposition on the topic of addictions, which come in many faces, including work, alcohol, food, pornography, drugs, emotions, people, and even religion.
 
“Some people even turn to religion to feel better about themselves,” said the authors. “Their attempts to relate to God are not based on a mutually intimate relationship… They attempt to relate to God, hoping He will make them feel better.”
 
They explain that addiction encompasses the use of any substance, behavior, emotional state, or relationship by which the marital covenant is broken (physically or spiritually), the sacred family bonds are destroyed, and other relationships are damaged.
 
“Addictions radically alter the sacred give and take of an intimate relationship, whether that relationship is a friendship, a marriage, or a parent/child relationship.”
 
The authors define addiction as “a device that the enemy uses most skillfully to destroy families.” Addictions have their origins in dysfunctional families and relationships and thrive in a cycle of blame, of victim-victimizer, of wounding, of (generational) sin and dysfunction – that even Christians are not spared from.
 
“As much as we would like to believe otherwise, Christians are not exempt from addictions,” the authors admitted. 
 
The Sedlaceks hope that through their Christian living book, individuals who face addictions will heal their deep heart wounds and break free from the bondage of self-destructive thinking. The authors exhort readers to look to Jesus as their healer and model of love and forgiveness. They have also made available with the new edition a revised and updated workbook that contains useful exercise to help readers on their journey to healing and restoration with God.

About the Authors
David and Beverly Sedlacek have worked for over forty-five years with persons who have been ravaged by sin and its effects. David holds a doctorate in social welfare and currently teaches biblical counseling in the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary at Andrews University. Beverly has a Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP) from Andrews University and has a private practice where she uses biblical principles to help clients walk through a healing journey.
