Bonner Bridge Replacement Nears Opening

PCL Construction and the North Carolina Department of Transportation temporarily opened the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge replacement to pedestrian and bicycle traffic on Saturday, February 9, providing a unique opportunity to experience the bridge without vehicular traffic.

Raleigh, NC – WEBWIRE

The bridge is the only access route via roadway across the Oregon Inlet between Bodie and Hatteras Islands. More than two million people travel across the Bonner Bridge each year. “These millions of people will not only enjoy the new view and smooth ride, but the reliability and safety that this engineering marvel provides to our society,” said David Hallac, superintendent, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, and Wright Brothers Memorial.

The new bridge, which will open to vehicular traffic later this month, runs parallel to its predecessor. PCL Construction, the bridge contractor, is working with the North Carolina Department of Transportation to use specific portions of the old bridge to create offshore, artificial reefs. A section of the south end will be repurposed into a fishing pier.

The Bonner Bridge replacement is expected to earn a new name at a more formal bridge dedication in April. About PCL Construction
