Clarence E. “Kip” Vold explains why he joined the Air Force in book “Farmer’s Son, Military Career”

Clarence E. “Kip” Vold published his autobiography, titled “Farmer’s Son, Military Career” (Page Publishing; 2015). The book is a captivating and poignant portrait of growing up on the plains of South Dakota, serving in the Air Force for 30 years and adjusting to civilian life.
 
A particular point of interest for readers is the author’s enlistment in the Air Force, which he narrates at length in “Farmer’s Son, Military Career.” He was not the only one in his family to have served in the military; his brother Robert did and after his discharge from the Army, attended college to avoid a career as a clerk in a hardware store.
 
Like Robert, the author believed his future was not in farming. At his brother’s insistence, he went to college but realized he was not cut out for college at that time.
 
“College was not working for me, was not for me at that time,” the author told Ric Bratton during his guesting at the latter’s radio program This Week in America, “and I did not want to go back directly to the farm. It was where I can get some experience and some training and basically like I said before, a chance to figure out what I wanted to do when I grow up.”
 
The author’s ambition in high school was to be an aeronautical engineer. He signed up for the Air Force Aviation Cadet Program in early 1959 but flunked the physical examination for his farsightedness (hyperopia). At the suggestion of his recruiter, he enlisted in the Air Force and the rest is history.
 
Throughout his 30-year career in the Air Force, the author carried out responsibilities as an electronics technician, a military training instructor and instructor supervisor, and a KC & EC-135 boom operator. His boom operator experience included 43 combat missions. He also scheduled alert and flight training, missile crew alert duty and administrative airlift missions for the 5th Air Force. He then went into aircraft operations management.

About the Author
Clarence Vold was born in Mitchell, SD on February 19, 1940. Though raised in a farm, he did not see his future in farming. He went to college and then enlisted in the Air Force. Throughout his career in the Air Force, he served as an electronics technician, military training instructor and instructor supervisor, and a KC & EC-135 boom operator until grounded medically. He scheduled alert and flight training, missile crew alert duty and administrative airlift mission for 5th Air Force, then aircraft operations management. His boom operator experience included 43 combat missions over Thailand and the Gulf of Tonkin. After retirement from active duty in 1989, he returned to college where he enjoyed the writing assignments and worked for the Hertz Corporation for five years.
