“El Bracero – A Mariachi Opera” to be performed in Santa Barbara honoring the legacy of migrant fieldworkers

ÁNIMO Theatre Company will be staging “El Bracero – A Mariachi Opera” at the Marjorie Luke Theatre on February 16, 2019, 7:30 p.m. to honor the legacy of migrant workers.
 
Set in the 1950s at the height of the Bracero program, “El Bracero” is a dynamic one-act “Mariachi Opera” which fuses mariachi music, ballet folklorico, and powerful “opera” style set pieces.  “El Bracero” highlights the challenges and injustices workers faced in the U.S. and focuses on the bracero camps in the 1950s. “El Bracero” is both a cultural and educational experience that teaches an important part of Mexican-American history that is often overlooked.
 
“El Bracero poignantly expresses the struggles encountered by fieldworkers to the audiences and honors their great contributions to the U.S.,” says Miguel Orozco, director and producer of the show. 
 
“El Bracero” was written by Rosalinda Verde from Visalia, CA and the Mariachi music in El Bracero is performed by Mariachi Águilas de J. Carlos Ozuna – one of the premiere mariachi ensembles in Southern California.  Joining the cast for the first time will be accomplished film and stage actor Armando Rey who has performed with numerous stage productions throughout California.
