Indoor Environmental Quality Issues Can Appear Long After Hailstorm Damage

EMSL Analytical provides testing services, sampling supplies, inspection tools and test kits to identify indoor environmental hazards associated with property damage.

Wallingford, CT – WEBWIRE

WFSB recently broadcasted a report about a severe hailstorm that hit Granby, Connecticut last summer. The news station interviewed property owners that had significant damage to their homes that ranged from roof and siding issues to problems involving skylights and garage doors. Some of the residents were still waiting for repairs to be completed months after the storm due to a slow response from their insurance provider.

As time goes on, and repeated rainstorms have hit the area, new property damage issues caused by water infiltration through damaged roofs, siding and windows have now become a new concern. The presence of indoor water damage for more than 48 hours, without being properly and quickly dried, can often lead to concerns over the growth of mold. Exposure to elevated levels of mold can cause allergies, act as a respiratory irritant and trigger asthma in some people with the condition.

If mold isn’t bad enough, when repairs are made to many residential and commercial properties there is a good chance asbestos-containing materials and lead-based paints could be disturbed and cause health and safety concerns. The use of asbestos-containing products and materials was common until not that long ago. These materials can become friable over time and if disturbed during cleanup, demolition or repair activities, could become a hazard. This is also true for dust from lead-based paints which could also become airborne when disturbed.

“Once it is safe to do so after a significant hailstorm, property owners should check for signs of damage around the exterior of their home or business,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “It’s a good idea to inspect roofs, skylights, siding, windows and doors. Anywhere that will allow water to enter a home or building should be repaired as soon as possible to prevent additional damage from mold and moisture problems.”
