EMSL’s Senior Mycologist, Dr. Željko Jurjevic, along with scientists Stephen W. Peterson from the USDA, USA and Giancarlo Perrone from the ISPA, Italy, have discovered a new species isolated from an office air sample. Talaromyces iowaense, named for Iowa, USA, where the fungal culture was collected.

Talaromyces contains species that are medically important along with some species that are important to the food industry. Additionally, some species of Talaromyces have been shown to produce mycotoxins, while others have been found to be useful in Bio-control and other biotechnological purposes.

“We are very proud of Dr. Jurjevic’s discoveries and the overall dedication of our microbiology department at EMSL,” said Dr. Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Dr. Jurjevic’s impressive accomplishment in providing breakthrough information to help the overall industry while still providing high-quality data for clients is a tribute to our dedicated staff at EMSL.”
