Coleman Lewis Coates voices opposition to Christians’ participation in war through book

Should a Christian go to war? Is there any biblical justification for war? Coleman Lewis Coates, a retired Presbyterian minister, answered no to both questions. He expanded his answers – and his opposition to Christians’ involvement in war – with Scripture in his book “The Listeners: Should Christians Participate in War?” (Redemption Press; 2017).
 
In “The Listeners,” the author preaches the incompatibility of the Gospel and warfare and explains what the response should be: obedience to God by listening to Him. Satan, whom Jesus Christ labeled as the source of human hostility, deceived Adam and Eve. Because of Satan’s deceit, Adam and Eve turned against God and were later expelled from the garden of Eden.
 
“They ignored their Creator who loved them but instead listen to the lies of Satan,” said the author about their rebellion against God. “The original sin had less to do with the nature of the forbidden fruits than with the fact that God had spoken, but we ignored Him.”
 
Satan’s work was more evident after the rebellion. With its relationship with God and with fellow human beings shattered, humanity was drawn into universal sin, which only leads to death. Humanity was enslaved by its nature to sin, which characteristics cause war and instability among people who cannot focus on the right relationship with God.
 
The author hopes that through “The Listeners,” readers will denounce war and not allow themselves to be used as war tool of Satan. With his wisdom and counsel along with the Spirit of God, the author aims to turn humanity from pursuing self-interest to following God’s plan and design for mankind.

Coleman L. Coates earned an AB in Anthropology from Wheaton College, an M.Div. from Reformed Theological Seminary. A freelance writer and editor of Christian education material at D.C. Cook, and language arts at Follet Educational Corporation, he collaborated with John Perkins on Let Justice Roll Down. Ordained at forty, Coates served PCUSA churches until retirement and worked as a chaplain in a state mental hospital. He plays the French horn, has done choral conduction and composed hymns, and is a prize-winning amateur photographer. Widowed with three adult children and five grandchildren, he lives in Tulsa, OK.
