Rose B. shares her journey of spiritual transformation in “The Gift of Sobriety”

Rose B. (not her real name) published her memoir “The Gift of Sobriety: A Spiritual Transformation” (ReadersMagnet; 2018), in which she details her battle with alcoholism and the subsequent nine-month journey of personal and spiritual transformation to sobriety. What makes this book different from other memoirs about addiction and recovery is that the subject’s alcoholism kicked in after her successful teaching and research career.
 
The author was 67 years old and had retired from teaching when her partner and wife for 20 years, Leslie, passed away due to cancer. Unable to handle her grief, she slid into alcoholism, not realizing it only worsened her depression. At the recommendation of an intake counselor, she checked into Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).
 
At the AA, Rose B. met friends who offered help and guidance in her journey to sobriety and, above all, a listening ear. “In AA, we share our story,” she told radio host Ric Bratton during her guesting at the latter’s program This Week in America. “When someone asked me to share one day, I shared and people seemed interested and I realized I was changing and I wanted to keep a record of what I was feeling and thinking. I’ve often times kept a journal because I knew I was changing. I wanted to be able to look back and understand how I had changed.”

Rose loves to learn. In fact, she has dedicated her life to learning, teaching, and analyzing data for many organizations. She earned a BA in psychology, an MA in counseling, an EdD in quantitative methods in educational psychology from the University of California at Berkeley and a Ph.D. in integral energy medicine from Holos Graduate School. She worked for 30 years at a campus in the California State University system. She enjoys playing the piano, meditation, gardening and spending time with family and friends.
