Athletic Facilities Close at High School after Student Contracts MRSA

EMSL Analytical provides environmental and surface testing to identify MRSA and other superbugs to help prevent the spread of disease.

Cinnaminson, NJ – WEBWIRE

The Oregonian recently published a report about actions taken by administrators from a high school in Portland, Oregon after a student was diagnosed with Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). According to the article, school district officials temporarily closed the school’s turf field, mat room and weight room to prevent further infections and allow time for the areas to be cleaned and disinfected.

At risk students were notified as MRSA is a type of staph bacteria that is resistant to certain antibiotics called beta-lactams. These antibiotics include methicillin and other common antibiotics, including oxacillin, penicillin and amoxicillin. These types of infections can be spread in an environment where students or others have contact with someone’s skin infection or personal items they have used. Common items include towels, bandages or razors that touched an infected person’s skin or surfaces such as gym equipment and mats.

“People engaged in contact sports or those that use athletic training facilities where surfaces can easily become contaminated are at increased risk for superbugs like MRSA,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Fortunately, surface testing can help to identify when microbial pathogens are present. Testing not only helps to prevent infections or to pinpoint the source of the outbreak, it is also instrumental for confirming disinfection procedures are effective.”

Working to help prevent the spread of MRSA and other bacterial and fungal pathogens are the scientists at EMSL Analytical, Inc. They offer a comprehensive range of surface and environmental testing services and provide all of the necessary sampling supplies. EMSL has even sponsored an educational video about environmental cleaning and disinfecting for MRSA that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/h9PXekClyp0.
