Promoting best practice teaching of comprehension in Australia

WEBWIRE

We have collaborated with education expert Susan Taylor, on new white paper Reading for Meaning: A guide to the research on best-practice teaching of comprehension in today’s world. The paper includes pedagogical discussion around comprehension instruction best-practice, along with practical suggestions for teachers and school leaders.

Globalization and technological developments are changing the modern learning landscape. With a growing number of multilingual students in Australian schools and schools worldwide, it has become increasingly important for teachers to ensure all pupils can connect with texts and are prepared for their learning journeys.

In the paper, Taylor considers the importance of comprehension in the twenty-first century learning environment, how effective instruction can be achieved, and comprehension teaching for learners with English as an additional language: ‘Effective readers use a range of strategies during reading to help them to gain a sophisticated understanding of the texts they engage with. The need for students to fully comprehend, and be discerning about, the multitude of texts they engage with in various forms has never been greater.’

Susan Taylor is a teacher and lecturer, with literacy, language, and literature being her speciality subjects. As well as authoring a series of English textbooks for primary students, she has written and consulted on primary literacy for OUP in Australia, and also presented a workshop on teaching comprehension at the Australian Literacy Educators’ Association Conference 2018.
