Reading Wayward Soldier is both a learning experience and an experience in feeling; a source for thinking about dehumanization and for sober reflection on obedience to a chain of command. Hovee’s thoughts are specially helpful for those who, seeking meaningful service, must battle within the self “regarding the ultimate price.” As America needs all the honesty it can muster – Wayward Soldier is required reading for both soldier and citizen. This fresh rebound of “Wayward Soldier: A Reserve Psychologist’s Memoir and Analysis During the Second American-Iraqi War” comes at a time when a central theme of the book is splashing down on the American landscape once again. This embattled concept of freedom of speech is like a piercing arrow through the book’s pages, illuminating the risks of service members speaking out about tactical and ethical matters to their peers and superiors. With a different but all too familiar ring, it is being played out again in the civilian sector with relentless vigor.

Dr. Mark J. Hovee, Psy.D.’s career has brought him a lot of rewarding experiences in his field. Along with that are experiences that are also life-changing and unforgettable. In his memoir, he shares eye-opening accounts and encounters during his service as a reserve psychologist during the Iraq War. Readers will discover the reality of what he has been through at every turn of the page.

“Wayward Soldier” is an honest and revealing narration about the author’s pivotal experiences since 9/11. He talks about his involuntary deployment to Germany and how that experience established the overall foundation of the book.

Looking back, he recalls unforgettable encounters with the staff, soldiers, and spouses he worked with as well as highlighting the mistreatment of detainees surrounding the Abu Ghraib debacle. Along with that, he also writes about his struggle to be published while he was on duty, his problematic reentry as a civilian, and the tough career decisions he had to face.

“Wayward Soldier” is indeed the author’s autobiography and a memoir about his journey written into one honest and gripping book. Soon, Dr. Hovee gets to share his experiences as his book is set to become part of the upcoming 2018 Guadalajara International Book Fair happening on November 24 to December 2. A literary and cultural festival rolled into one, the book fair will truly be a grand celebration. So, grab a copy and don’t miss it!
