Thai Union shortlisted alongside Apple and Unilever for Thomson Reuters Foundation Stop Slavery Award

BANGKOK – WEBWIRE

The Thomson Reuters Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the world’s largest news and information provider, has announced Thai Union Group PCL. is one of six companies shortlisted for its annual Stop Slavery Award. Nominees also include Apple and Unilever, among others, representing a range of industries from seafood and fashion to financial services and technology.

The Award was first launched in 2015 and is the first global recognition for businesses which have set a gold standard in efforts to eradicate forced labor from supply chains. Winners will be announced at the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s annual human rights forum Trust Conference, on November 14, in London.

“Thai Union puts sustainability at the heart of our business. We have worked hard to combat modern slavery and promote safe and legal labor throughout our supply chains, as well as to position ourselves as leaders of positive change in the private sector,” said Dr. Darian McBain, Global Director of Sustainable Development at Thai Union. “Being nominated for this award is not only a great honor and recognition of the hard work by our teams on our SeaChange® sustainability strategy, but a testament to our collaboration with partners such as the Migrant Workers Rights Network and the International Transport Workers’ Federation, to make a positive impact on the business and people’s lives.”

Thai Union’s efforts and international advocacy to combat modern slavery and forced labor were also recognized last month as Thai Union was invited to participate in a high-level panel at the United Nations General Assembly, with Dr. McBain presenting the company’s actions and experiences in front of the world’s leadership on this agenda in New York City. A video of her participation can be seen at Thai Union’s YouTube channel.

Safe and legal labor is a key pillar of Thai Union’s SeaChange® sustainability strategy.

Key initiatives include introducing the company’s Vessel Code of Conduct in December 2017, and carrying out an audit of suppliers to ensure each is following this code.

Thai Union has also recently worked with partners to launch a demonstration boat to promote and increase understanding of human and labor rights for workers in the Thai fishing industry. And in August, Thai Union provided a written statement to support the Bali Process AAA Recommendations to address modern slavery and human trafficking.

Thai Union’s activities have achieved real results. For example, in May 2018, the company and its partners’ work on an innovative digital traceability pilot program resulted in new regulation from the Royal Thai Government requiring Thai vessel owners operating outside of national waters to provide a satellite communication system and device onboard for workers at sea.
