Last Tuesday, a delegation of four executives from National Beef, led by Tim Klein, CEO of National Beef and of Marfrig’s North America operation, toured Marfrig’s Tacuarembó Unit located in Uruguay. One of the main purposes of the tour was to exchange experiences in organic beef production, which is one of the market segments with the strongest growth potential in the world. During the tour of the Tacuarembó Unit, which produces organic beef (i.e., beef free of hormones and antibiotics from animals raised on pastures), Klein and his team were accompanied by Marcos Molina, chairman of the board of Marfrig, Eduardo Miron, CEO of Marfrig Global Foods, and Miguel Gularte, CEO of the South America Operation, which includes the Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and Chile divisions.

The visit to South America by the executives from the North America Operation, which is formed by the National Beef, marks the progress being made in integrating Marfrig’s two operations through the sharing of best practices.

Marfrig’s units in Uruguay have programs for producing higher-value beef of superior quality. The portfolio includes organic beef and certified Angus beef, the latter launched in 2011 under the product lines Tacuarembó Angus Beef and Tacuarembó Angus Premium Beef, both of which are recognized internationally and approved by the United States and European Union. The beef processed in Uruguay, including at the Tacuarembó Unit, is supplied by farms that participate in the club of certified producers, where animals are grass-fed and free of hormones and antibiotics.

Marfrig’s certified organic beef program began 18 years ago to meet the demand from European clients. Since its launch, the efforts in this market were supported by a partnership of cattle producers interested in exploring the organic market. In 2001, the Tacuarembó Unit received authorization to export to the European Community and, in 2003, was authorized by the National Organic Program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (NOP-USDA).
