Elsevier, the global information analytics business specializing in science and health, and its authors had a strong showing at the British Medical Association’s (BMA) annual BMA Medical Book Awards ceremony, winning nine of the 20 categories.

Out of 670 titles submitted to the BMA from publishers around the globe, a total of 41 Elsevier professional and scholarly products were honored, including nine first prizes and 32 Highly Commended recognitions.

“In Illustrated Textbook of Paediatrics, 5th Edition, often called the “sunflower book” because of the cover drawing, we try hard to facilitate learning with diagrams and illustrations,” said co-author Dr. Tom Lissauer, MB BChir RECPCH, Honorary Consultant Paediatrician, Imperial College Healthcare Trust, London, and Centre for International Child Health, Imperial College, London, UK. “This award (First Place, Pediatrics category) will encourage us to continue to develop this approach. Special thanks to the children of Campie Primary School in Musselburgh for their art-work submissions, and congratulations to Morven Stewart who won the competition and is this edition’s cover artist.”

Elsevier and its authors received first prizes in the following categories:

“What an honor to win First Place in the Surgery category for Plastic Surgery, 4th Edition,” said Dr. Peter Neligan, Professor of Surgery, Division of Plastic Surgery, University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA. “Many thanks to the wonderful teamwork of the Volume Editors – Geoff Gurtner, David Song, Ed Rodriguez, Joe Losee, Peter Rubin, Maurice Nahabedian, Jim Chang and Dan Liu – as well as the Elsevier staff – Belinda Kuhn, Louise Cook, Alex Mortimer and Sam Crowe – and to all who contributed to the 4th Edition.”

Dr. Stanley Plotkin, Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics, University of Pennsylvania, and former Chief, Division of Infectious Diseases, The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA, whose book Plotkin’s Vaccines, 7th Edition won First Prize in the Public Health category, said, “The progress of vaccine development and use has dramatically increased since the first edition of Vaccines in 1988. The 7th Edition reflects this progress, which is providing protection against numerous deadly pathogens. Vaccinology is now a domain of medicine in its own right.”

Dr. Nicola Zammitt, MBChB, BSc (Med Sci), MD, FRCP (Edin), Consultant Physician and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, UK, co-author of Essentials of Kumar and Clark’s Clinical Medicine, 6th Edition which received First Prize in the Internal Medicine category, said, “We’re delighted to receive this prestigious award and hope that medical students and junior doctors throughout the world have enjoyed and learned from our book. We also acknowledge the work of Anne Ballinger, whose involvement from the first edition to the fifth brought this book into its current form.”
