Children’s Book by Nola Reifel Introduces Children to the Joys of Gardening

1 Peter 4:10-11 says: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” Nola Reifel makes good use of her gifts – by writing children’s books, one of which is “Adventures In Grandma’s Wyoming Garden” (Christian Faith Publishing, 2017).
 
A children’s book like no other, “Adventures in Grandma’s Wyoming Garden” has a three-fold purpose: to inspire grandparents and parents to spend more time with their children in the garden, introduce gardening to children, and emphasize the importance of planting and harvesting.
 
Reifel’s deep faith inspired her to take up writing children’s books and her family provided her with the premise to write her stories.
 
“The Lord inspired me to write some children’s books that are a little different, mixing Scripture and stories about my family in our garden together has been a blessing,” said Reifel. “Hopefully these stories will inspire grandparents and parents to spend time in the garden with their grandchildren or children.”
 
Written for children under 10 years of age, “Adventures In Grandma’s Wyoming Garden” opens and then closes with verses that extol the beauty of God’s creation. This children’s book tells the story of a family that grows a garden in a place where it is not easy to grow plants but they try anyway. This demonstrates a lesson in faith.
 
Three generations of the family work on the garden, which is the brainchild of Grandma. This demonstrates family interaction through useful work. They grow a wide variety of plants, to which Grandma gives thanks to Jesus. This leaves readers with a lesson for thanksgiving.
 
Grandma and the grandchildren later find a rabbit in the garden. They name her Happy because she always makes them happy. This should make readers, especially those who know their Bible, to reflect on Genesis 1:31: “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.”
 
At the end of her story, the author encourages readers to plant something soon. “When we plant (sow), we expect a harvest to reap. Planting and harvesting is a blessing from God!” said Reifel.
