Identifying Beach, Pool and Aquatic Center Pathogens and Chemical Exposure Risks in Puerto Rico

Zimmetry Environmental provides aquatic, air and other environmental quality testing services to protect the public, workers and prevent outbreaks of recreational water illnesses.

Bayamon, Puerto Rico – WEBWIRE

In Puerto Rico and across the Caribbean, the health and safety of our beaches, pools and other water facilities is not only essential for protecting people’s health, it’s also critical to the local economies.

Puerto Rico is blessed with more than 270 miles of coastline that is home to almost 300 beaches. These world-renowned beaches offer locals and countless tourists a place to relax and engage in all types of water–related activities, such as swimming.

In most circumstances, people leave the beach with nothing more than great memories; however, as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports, “Swimming at beaches with pollution in the water or in the sand can make you ill.” Some of the common sources of water pollution listed by the EPA include:

  • Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs)
  • Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSOs)
  • Stormwater
  • Trash and Litter
  • Fertilizers
  • Pesticides
  • Animal Feeding Operations (AFOs)
  • Boat Discharges

These illnesses are known as recreational water illnesses (RWIs). RWIs are caused by germs that are spread by swallowing, breathing in mists or aerosols from, or having contact with contaminated water. Recreational waters includes water at beaches or from swimming pools, hot tubs, water parks, water play areas, interactive fountains, lakes or rivers.

“In Puerto Rico and across the Caribbean, the health and safety of our beaches, pools and other water facilities is not only essential for protecting people’s health, it’s also critical to the local economies,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “To help ensure healthy recreational areas, Zimmetry’s aquatic and environmental professionals offer comprehensive microbial and chemical testing services for both natural and manmade water sources. If test results indicate a problem, corrective actions can then be implemented to eliminate or mitigate any health and safety risks. Testing is also instrumental for pinpointing the source of a RWI outbreak if one has already occurred.”

Zimmetry is also pleased to have recently sponsored an educational video about beach related illnesses that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/iAmHJ31xqkg
