Reverend Peter G. Vu publishes daily devotional for children and families

To encourage children to embrace and reflect Christian virtues and help parents foster a strong faith life and good prayer habits, Reverend Peter G. Vu published “Lord Jesus, I Want To See… Family/ Children Edition” (Dog Ear, 2017). The weekly prayer book is a response to the challenges facing today’s children and families. 

Reverend Vu realizes that Christians these days do not take their prayer life seriously and most children of the current generation are busy with sports, computer games, friends, and social life. Many children too are not raised in a traditional family with loving parents or receive proper spiritual care that fosters a close relationship with Jesus. Worse, they get bombarded with bad influences by a society that has become so averse to faith.

“Lord Jesus, I Want To See” is designed for children to use during their own weekly prayers and for parents to pray with their children as a family. There are 52 weekly devotions in all (corresponding to the 52 Sundays in a year) and each devotion includes a Scripture related to a specific topic (such as friendship, faith, love, generosity, thankfulness, and temptation), a discussion of what Jesus said about it, and a concrete call to action and a promise (in a form of prayer) to address the challenges to the topic.

For example, on the fourth Sunday of May, Reverend Vu writes about generosity and quotes Matthew 20:1-16). He then offers a short sermon around the topic and advice based on Scripture on how to be generous.

“This weekly prayer book not only helps our children and family begin the week on a right note, but also encourages them to work on specific topics and Christian attributes such as friendship, teacher, faith, love, generosity, forgiveness, thankfulness, and so on,” said Reverend Wu about his purpose of publishing his weekly devotional. “My hope is that our Lord Jesus will heal the spiritual blindness of our children and families and help them see things in their lives with a better vision.” 

“Lord Jesus, I Want To See” is published to good reviews. Writing for IndieReader, Catherine Langrehr called the book “a sweet, thoughtful devotional for children that is age-appropriate without being condescending and seeks to foster a kind and compassionate morality.”

“The lessons taught are likewise taught in plain and simple words, relatively accessible to children of elementary-school age,” wrote Langrehr in her piece, “and the prayers are reasonably short and not too difficult to memorize. About the Author 
Rev. Peter G. Vu has been a Catholic priest of the Diocese of Grand Rapids, Michigan for twenty years. He was was born in Saigon City (currently Ho Chi Minh City), Viet Nam and was a young boy when the Viet Nam War ended. He grew up under communism and endured lots of hardship for over a decade. 

After high school, he snuck out by boat and came to America to start his seminary training. He attended Union High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan for one year to learn the language and culture. After studying at Aquinas College for two years while staying at Christopher House Seminary, he was sent to the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota for his last two years of college, where he graduated with a double major in Mathematics and Philosophy. 

He attended the University of St. Mary of the Lake and Mundelein Seminary in Chicago, Illinois for his graduate studies. He was ordained with the Master Degree of Divinity (MDiv) and the Sacred Theology Baccalaureate (STB). He was also trained in Clinical Pastoral Care in the Hospital and Nursing Home setting and practiced at a general hospital in Oxnard, California. Aside from serving six different churches over the last 20 years, he also served as chaplain of Grand Rapids Home for Veterans for almost 10 years.
