San Francisco author Peter Andras Deme’s book centers on man-animal bond

Author John Grogan once said, “Animal lovers are a special breed of humans, generous of spirit, full of empathy, perhaps a little prone to sentimentality, and with hearts as big as a cloudless sky.” San Francisco resident Peter Andras Deme proves to be that kind of person in his book “The Black Dolphin of Atlantis” (Page Publishing, 2018).
 
The book has been described as “an evocative tale of love, despair, and salvation on the spectacular California coast” where takes place of what could have been the most “surreal and magnificent encounter” between man and animal. The author, married and with a son, dedicates “The Black Dolphin of Atlantis” to the memory of his dog Rosemary, and to the future of his son.
 
Peter has a hard time moving on after the death of his pet and the grieving process would have been more difficult if not for his son. One day, while feeding the seals, he meets a black dolphin and soon he develops a friendship with the creature, eventually naming her Rosemary. He later realizes Rosemary is more than just an animal but “a fellow thinking being.”
 
Rosemary then takes Peter into the deep to meet the Old Man of Atlantis, the last living citizen of the lost continent. He does not want Atlantis to die with him and to keep it alive, at least one human being should know the secret of Atlantis, the last refuge for humans and where humans and dolphins could coexist harmoniously. For this reason, he sent Rosemary to bring Peter to him.
 
Learning that his dog is still alive and waiting for him outside the universe, Peter agrees to take the place of the Old Man in return for his help in getting his dog back.

Peter Andras Deme is a San Francisco resident who escaped communist Czechoslovakia in 1966, served in the US Army, pursued degrees from the American University and Georgetown University, and became a US citizen in 1977.
