New Professional Book Unveils the RISE Framework to Support Students and Educators in Grades 1–8

New York, NY – WEBWIRE

Today, Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education, and media company, announced the release of The Next Step Forward in Reading Intervention: The RISE Framework, a new professional book from literacy educators Jan Richardson, Ph.D., and Ellen Lewis, M.Ed. The RISE (Reading Intervention for Students to Excel) framework is a step-by-step resource for educators of striving readers in grades 1–8. It provides intensive, targeted, and short-term instruction to bolster student literacy skills, proficiency, and the confidence needed to excel as a reader. The Next Step Forward in Reading Intervention is now available: www.scholastic.com/rise

The handbook outlines two fast and focused intervention plans that help students construct meaning while reading: RISE for students in grades 1–5 reading at guided reading levels C–N, who need to work on decoding, fluency, phonics, reading comprehension, and writing, and RISE Up for students in grades 3–8 reading at guided reading levels O–Z, who need to strengthen their comprehension strategies. Both plans are based on Richardson’s best-selling The Next Step Forward in Guided Reading.

Key features of the RISE framework include:

  • Instructional stations through which students rotate in small groups daily for six to eight weeks
  • Lesson guides that support intense, meaning-focused instruction for 45–60 minutes
  • Opportunities for collaborative team meetings that help instructors identify daily teaching goals, monitor progress, and decide when students are ready to exit intervention
  • An appendix containing lesson templates, Comprehension Cards, tools for communicating with families about literacy, and additional resources
  • Access to online resources and videos that offer insights from experts, lessons in action at each station, and team meetings

Jan Richardson, Ph.D., renowned K–12 educator and professional development consultant, leading expert in guided reading, and respected author, says, “Students who need intervention often get trapped in a cycle of frustration that inhibits them from becoming the successful and happy readers we know that they want to be. RISE makes it possible to help striving readers make swift progress in a way that alleviates frustration, helps students improve and maintain literacy skills, and cultivates a lifelong love of reading that is so important for continued success.”

Reading teacher and literacy consultant Ellen Lewis, M.Ed. adds, “Making students lifetime members of the reading intervention club does not help them overcome their literacy challenges. RISE helps kids move out and beyond intervention. After just eight weeks, my students who participated in RISE sustained their advancements, and thrived even more once they returned to their classrooms.”

The Next Step Forward in Reading Intervention will revolutionize the way that intervention happens in schools by breaking the cycle of ongoing remedial programs that leave too many students stuck year after year,” says Dr. Lois Bridges, Vice President & Publisher, Scholastic Education. “Jan Richardson and Ellen Lewis have combined their Reading Recovery® expertise and firsthand classroom experience to cultivate a professional resource for meaning-centered intervention that is proven to get kids reading on grade level while developing an understanding of and love for reading, and that is invaluable.”
