Undeclared Egg Allergen Results in Food Recall from Some Northern California Grocery Stores

LA Testing provides food allergen testing services to help companies comply with labeling regulations and to aid people managing food allergens.

Huntington Beach, CA – WEBWIRE

In Spring, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted information about one of the nation’s largest natural and organic food grocery store chains that announced the voluntary recall of some decorated cookies from self-service cookie displays at nine Northern California grocery stores. The recall was launched because the cookies contained egg allergen that was not listed on the product sign.

The products in question could put people with certain food allergies at risk if they were to be consumed. To protect people with food allergies, The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA) requires that food labels clearly identify the food source names of all ingredients that are, or contain any protein derived from, the eight most common food allergens. These account for 90% of allergic reactions to foods and include eggs, wheat, milk, crustacean shellfish, fish, tree nuts, peanuts and soybeans.

“At the time of the recall notice, one illness had already been reported,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Even one person is too many as anyone with a food allergy that inadvertently consumes foods that contain them could have a life-threatening allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis.”

Since there is no cure for food allergies, people with the condition have to avoid all foods that contain the allergen they are sensitive to every day of their lives. Working to protect people from unwittingly consuming food allergens and helping to prevent costly products recalls for food manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers, are the food scientists at LA Testing. In addition to food allergen testing, their experts provide complete labeling services and a wide array of other analytical services.
