EDN Congratulates! Three EDN Workshop Projects Receive Awards

EDN congratulates! is a series of news stories where we congratulate documentary teams from EDN workshops when they have achieved great results. In this edition of EDN congratulates! we are proud to announce that three EDN forum and workshop projects received awards at various documentary industry events.

Keeping track of how projects and finished films are doing is of great importance not only to filmmakers but also to the European Documentary Network, especially when projects have been developed or pitched at EDN forums and workshops. Therefore we are proud to announce three titles that have gained official recognition through through awards and/or acquisition of development funding. The projects were previously co-developed at the EDN initiatives Docs in Thessaloniki and Twelve for the Future.

The awarded titles are:

Synopsis (extract): In September 2018, the entire world will remember a decade old anniversary. On the 15th of September 2008, Lehman Brothers, the 4th largest investment bank in the United States, was cornered and pushed towards the largest bankruptcy of all time: $631 billion of debt. The failure of Lehman Brothers plunged the world into a financial crisis of a magnitude never seen. The world never really recovered. And nothing has really changed. Banks are still making obscene profits, stock prices are back to their usual levels. On the other hand, wages are going down, unemployment rates have skyrocketed. The gap between rich and poor gets bigger every day. And some former insiders are still fighting to open the world’s and the authorities’ eyes.

Synopsis: When their mother is sentenced to 10 years in a Mexican prison on questionable charges, teenagers Rocío and Ale are left with no choice but to play the role of both mother and father to their two younger siblings. As Honduran immigrants living in Mexico, they lack work papers, making opportunities for employment scarce. While the oldest, Ale, tries his best to make rational decisions for the good of the family, the pressure mounts. Finances are tight, his girlfriend is expecting and his sister Rocío is testing her teenage boundaries, wanting less responsibility and more freedom. Fearing she may get herself into trouble, Ale clamps down and tensions between them escalate. As apprehensions about the future intensify, Ale must make the difficult decision between keeping the family together in Mexico or breaking them apart to cross the US border for work.

Synopsis: Aurora is a pop sensation from a small town in Norway. She was discovered at the age of 16, dropped out of school, and spent the next years touring the world. At the age of 20 she is at a breaking point. The film will be an epic coming-of-age story about a young woman finding her way in life and in music.
