On the foggy night of July 25, 1956, the Swedish liner Stockholm collided with the Italian ocean liner Andrea Doria off the coast of Nantucket. Why did the two vessels crash against each other? Who was at fault? Robert J. Meurn’s In Extremis: Are the Passengers Safe? investigates the actual facts behind one of history’s most terrible marine disasters.

Robert J. Meurn, a retired navy captain and master mariner, uses his expertise to examine the facts behind the deadly ocean liner collision. Foraging through computer simulator of tracks, maritime logs and records, court documents, and news clippings, Meurn’s book answers questions that have been left unanswered for over 60 years since the disaster. Did the weather play a part? Why did two ocean liners equipped with radars not see each other? Did Captain Calamai of the Andrea Doria deserve to become the scapegoat?

The book presents compelling, hard evidence about the disaster that may help us avoid another one from occurring in the future. I“n Extremis: Are the Passengers Safe?” is now available at selected online bookstores.
