Originally of aristocratic birth, Anne and her siblings endure life in the “meanest of slums in London” following the death of their parents in a carriage accident. It did not help them that their father incurred a huge debt and they ended up paying for it. Worse, Anne’s fiancé broke off their engagement, thus she is reduced to work on any job she could find to support her family. To turn their life around, Anne and her siblings agree to make the voyage to the colonies at the other side of the Atlantic – in Boston where “opportunities available for people that aren’t afraid to work for what they want” await.
 
Of course, life in Boston is not without challenges for Anne. She makes a good name as a hardworking barmaid and is set to establish a good life for herself and her family. Unfortunately, her reputation will vanish and her efforts will be for naught due to slander by an English officer whose advances are rejected by Anne. Help comes when Theo, a childless widower, enters her life.
 
“A New Beginning” draws readers into common human struggles and invites readers to dig deep and consider anew their identity and personhood in the context of the harsh realities of life, as the Spencers’ fall into poverty. At the same time, the historical romance novel provides readers a moment to pause and meditate on their purpose and place in life by focusing on the themes they will find in the story such as family, choice, courage, hopes, identity, randomness of life, perseverance, and love – essential elements for starting anew in life.
