“Politically Homeless: A Five-Year Odyssey across Three Continents” by Mary Terzian

In a span of five-years, poignant devastations and profound realizations bring clarity to an almost forgotten future—dreams confined to the opinions of a shattered world. For Mary Terzian, even the refusal of her parents, in regard to her aspirations, proves powerless over her will to become an educationally inclined woman.

In 1957 Terzian leaves Cairo to work with the United Nations World Health Organization in Alexandria, to extend her horizons, and concurrently start saving funds for college tuition. Five years later she moves to war-torn Congo for a UN assignment. In that multicultural milieu, she often endures the recurring question: “Where do you come from?” which leads to lengthy explanations of her Armenian background, immigrant status in Egypt, her versatility in foreign languages and other information that complicate her answers further. A series of nerve-racking mishaps befall her, yet none of them are powerful enough to break her spirit.

Terzian takes advantage of her extended vacation to visit European capitals, including the Soviet Union where she needs to visit her brother in Yerevan, Armenia. Her departure coincides with Khrushchev’s demise. Fortunately, she leaves peacefully to continue her globe-trotting. Terzian is eager to find a peaceful corner in this world where she can accomplish her dreams.

But, for how long can a woman’s “un-waning” will endure the heart-shattering established principles of this broken world?

Find out as Mary Terzian’s “Politically Homeless” enters the biggest book fair in America, 2018 BookExpo New Title Showcase, on May 31-June 3 in New York, NY.

About the Author
Terzian’s book reflects the universal struggles of immigrants who have lost their homeland and have to re-start life elsewhere. It unfolds her extraordinary ventures into unfamiliar territory, a journey that transforms a shy and reserved young girl into an intrepid woman. Khrushchev’s demise, a crocodile meal and traveling with chickens on a commuter plane are normal hazards in her life. She returns to Leopoldville on board a flight commandeered by mercenaries! Per Kirkus Reviews “Through her own story, Terzian articulates the ways in which patriarchy, culture, bureaucracy and politics challenge but never fully derail an independent woman’s ambitions. An often charming memoir that intertwines personal and political histories.”

Terzian now lives in California and calls herself “an imported American.”
