The DIRECTV CINEMA Exclusive “Women Walks Ahead” will screen Wednesday, April 25, as part of the AT&T Gala Event at 2018 Tribeca Film Festival in New York.

Based on a true story, “Woman Walks Ahead” is the story of a headstrong New York widow, Catherine Weldon (Jessica Chastain “Zero Dark Thirty”), who takes on a dangerous journey west to Dakota to paint a portrait of Sioux chief Sitting Bull, facing off with an army officer (Sam Rockwell “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”) intent on war with Native Americans. Weldon becomes embroiled in the Lakota peoples’ struggle over the rights to their land and joins forces to take on the U.S. government. The film is directed by Susanna White (“Our Kind of Traitor”).

“‘Woman Walks Ahead’ is a beautiful film, showcasing a fearless woman who sticks to her convictions and uses her voice to help others,” said Hanny Patel, vice president, AT&T Video Marketing. “Jessica Chastain comes to life as advocate and heroine Caroline Weldon in this film, a remarkable tale on human rights and the courage it takes to stand for what you believe in.”

The film debuted at the 2017 Toronto Film Festival. It was acquired by DIRECTV and A24 to premiere on the DIRECTV CINEMA Exclusive platform on May 31 and will be released in theaters on June 29. DIRECTV CINEMA is a premium pay-per-view service that gives customers exclusive access to select new releases before they hit theaters.

The Tribeca Film Festival is known for showcasing a diverse selection of independent films, some of which have premiered on the DIRECTV CINEMA platform, including “The Last Movie Star,” “The Exception,” and “EQUALS.”

As part of AT&T’s ongoing relationship with Tribeca, DIRECTV CINEMA is hosting a group of Tribeca fellows at a mentor event Thursday, April 26. There, the students will have a Q&A session with directors from DIRECTV/A24 films. This comes off the success of another mentor event DIRECTV CINEMA did with AFI last fall. We’ll continue to hold more of these events at other film festivals this year, so stay tuned.
