The first book in the Adralack Trilogy, “The Adralack Crack on Mt. Baker” sees four professors getting caught in a mountain mishap. While on winter break, the foursome decided to climb Mt. Baker. However, their trek takes a disastrous turn as they get caught in an avalanche that leaves one person injured. With nowhere and no one else to turn to, they are forced to seek refuge in the Adralack Crack, a shallow rock overhang. Upon stepping inside the temporary shelter, one of the professors suddenly vanishes in the active alien portal. His abrupt disappearance leads his three remaining companions to look for him. However, their rescue plans don’t come without complications.

Aside from the adventure it offers, Averette’s novel also comes with valuable life lessons. According to a BlueInk Review, “The best writing here occurs during the action scenes. Averette’s descriptions of the avalanche, a tunnel cave-in, and the story’s climatic denouement are taut and suspenseful.”
