In the book, sixteen-year-old Kelsey Kelley takes up a summer job as a stable hand on the quarter horse racing circuit. A gold-maned stallion who is a top bet for the winning spot surprisingly loses the race. Hearing rumors of bribery and horse murder, Kelsey sets out to find answers and protect the stallion, which puts her in danger.
