DarkOwl Announces Release of Map the Dark

DarkOwl, a Denver based information security company specializing in darknet intelligence information, today announced the release of Map the Dark, an interactive data visualization of the darknet. The tool is designed to provide insight into the characteristics of the darknet (or “dark web”), the elusive part of the internet not indexed by search engines and often associated with criminal activity.

The sites comprising the darknet are designed to be hidden and anonymous, making it a challenge to find and track darknet activity. To address this gap, DarkOwl built a machine-learning platform that constantly scrapes, indexes and stores darknet content so that customers can easily search, monitor and mitigate exposed data and darknet threats. Map The Dark uses the data collected by this platform - known to be the largest database of commercially available darknet content in the world -  to provide an overview of what the darknet looks like from a source, language, and classification perspective.

Map the Dark depicts which percentage of darknet sites fall under certain categories, such as “cryptocurrency” or “drugs.” Viewers can also use layered filters to apply secondary characteristics, such as network or primary language.
