Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) and Design & Engineering company Logic PD has been awarded up to $675,000 in grants from the Minnesota Apprenticeship Initiative (MAI) to launch a new registered apprenticeship program at its advanced manufacturing worksite in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.

The MAI is a partnership between the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) and the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) that is funded through a $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor.

“We are extremely appreciative for the opportunity to join this program, as this partnership will do much more than just set us apart from our regional competitors,” said Bruce DeWitt, Logic PD’s CEO and president.  “Most importantly, it gives us a way to train our manufacturing workers faster, help them develop highly skilled capability sets, and provides them with a path to move forward in both their professional and personal lives.”

Representatives from Apprenticeship Minnesota attended a ceremony on April 5 at Logic PD’s Eden Prairie worksite to launch the new program, which aims to serve up to 135 apprentices over the next two years. Leaders from DLI and DEED worked with Logic PD’s manufacturing team to design its new training program centered on teaching apprentices how to solder complex electronics and operate machinery that manufactures electronic boards and circuits.

“The modern apprenticeship responds to the needs of today’s worker, who, more and more, want to earn and learn at the same time,” said Jeremy Hanson Willis, deputy commissioner at DEED. “We appreciate Logic PD’s partnership on this program, which will give Logic PD a competitive advantage to both attract and retain their workers.”

Since the program’s inception in 2016, 30 new MAI programs have begun at businesses across Minnesota, with more than 200 new apprentices. The goal of MAI is to help more than 100 employers develop apprenticeship programs to recruit, train and retrain 1,000 new apprentices in the industries of advanced manufacturing, agriculture, health care services, information technology and transportation.
