In Memoir, Traumatic Brain Injury Survivor Matthew Duke Rodgers Shares Story of Miraculous Recovery

Does God answer prayers? Do miracles really happen? Or are stories like Rodgers’ mere coincidence?

Missouri country boy Matthew Duke Rodgers figured out in an automobile accident on May 15, 1989, Mother’s Day. He was a college freshman at the time of his accident.
 
Prior to that life-changing event, for several months, the author’s mother had a “funny” feeling whenever she was around near him. She said it felt like something could happen but she did not have any sense of what it was.
 
His aunt also had a recurring dream that he was killed in a car crash. Ashamed, she never told the family about the dream but did caution her nephew several times months before the accident about his driving.
 
After being thrown out of his car 75 feet and landing on his head, a miracle rescue followed. Both Duke’s breathing and heart had to be restarted before being flown by Life-Flight to North Kansas City Hospital.  On site he was given the lowest possible coma score of 3 no movement. The hospital gave him little to no chance of recovery due to his multiple skull fractures – and his family little encouragement.
 
That’s where his family, friends, and Christian community took over, bringing in the saving power of God in and out of the ICU. The author’s 28 days in coma was a day of intense waiting, incessant praying, and fervent trusting in the Lord.
 
Not only his own family took care and prayed for him but also his brothers and sisters in faith. Various individuals consoled his family and interceded on his behalf, including a fireman who lost a daughter in a car accident, the head pastor of their church, a man with a gift of prophesy, and a circus performer from Florida and a father of a brain-injured son, both directed by the Lord to pray for him in the hospital.
 
The author endured his injury, much to the surprise of the doctors and nurses who attended to him. The real question of his miraculous recovery was not one of fact but of faith: God works miracles.

A life-changing event it was for the author. “Stand Alone” is an amazing story of hope that is rooted in a reliable God.
