Listeria Concerns Prompt California Company to Recall Guacamole Products from Multiple States
LA Testing provides laboratory services to identify Listeria and other foodborne pathogens to help prevent illnesses and costly product recalls.
Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted information about a food recall initiated by a company based in California. The recall was launched after positive test results for Listeria monocytogenes on two packages collected for the FDA’s random sample testing program.
The guacamole products were distributed throughout California, Nevada and Hawaii. Fortunately, at the time of the recall notice, no reports of human illnesses had been recorded. Consumers are being urged to throw away or return the guacamole products in questions.
“Even though there are no known illnesses involved with this case, the cost to companies involved in recalls and the public relations’ challenges they typically face are often substantial,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Had anyone become ill from eating Listeria contaminated foods, the groups most at risk include pregnant women, seniors and people with a weakened immune system. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that at least 90% of people who get Listeria infections are in a high risk group. The CDC also reports that Listeria is the 3rd leading cause of death from food poisoning.”
Working to prevent contaminated foods from reaching the public and causing costly product recalls are the food scientists at LA Testing. They offer advanced food testing services to identify Listeria and other foodborne pathogens. These services are also instrumental for evaluating and confirming disinfection procedures at food processing facilities. In the event of an outbreak, testing can facilitate the process of quickly pinpointing its source to prevent further infections.
