Mariachi Girl - A Bilingual Musical, to be Staged on Ventura County Community College Campuses

Following up the sold-out productions of El Bracero and ¡Ay Chihuahua!, ÁNIMO Theatre Company will stage Mariachi Girl on Oxnard, Ventura, and Moorpark college campuses in 2018.  The musical will premiere on February 23^rd at 7:30 PM at Oxnard College’s Performing Arts Center with performances also scheduled for February 24^th at 7:30 PM and February 25^th at 3:00 PM.  Proceeds from ticket sales will be used to help raise funds for local college scholarships.
 
Written by Roxanne Schroeder-Arce with music and lyrics by Hector Martinez Morales, this coming of age bilingual musical follows young Cita’s dreams of following in her father’s footsteps to become a Mariachi, but runs counter to his traditional, patriarchal roots.  Through the eyes of a young girl, the musical explores cultural stereotypes and assimilation in the United States.  It is a heartwarming story that celebrates cultural identity and promotes a positive self-image for young girls.   
 
ÁNIMO Theatre Company brings untold stories to promote awareness and appreciation of diverse cultures.  Shows such as El Bracero and ¡Ay Chihuahua!, and now Mariachi Girl share encouraging stories of the sacrifices and dreams of immigrants.
 
Mariachi Girl is the third production for ÁNIMO Theatre and is directed by Miguel Orozco with musical direction by Juan Carlos Ozuna, featuring music by Mariachi Aguilas de Oxnard.  The musical will debut Estefani Lopez, a young talent from Riverside who showcased her talents on La Voz-Kids and Tengo Talento. The cast and crew of Mariachi Girl are home grown talent, some of whom are college students from the Ventura County Community College District.  
 
With Spanish sub-titles, the musical offers entertainment for the whole family and encourages families to communicate and support each other.
