CIO Survey Reveals Use of Social Determinants of Health in Patient Engagement

CIOs note importance of identifying SDOH to improve care management, seek guidance on integrating this data

ATLANTA – WEBWIRE

LexisNexis® Risk Solutions has announced results of a survey targeting hospital and health system chief information officers (CIOs). Focused on social determinants of health (SDOH), the results show that hospitals and health systems are using SDOH data to enhance patient engagement programs. Collaborating with healthsystemCIO.com, LexisNexis found that 88 percent of hospital CIOs say the ideal time for patient engagement is prior to admission through community health efforts.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, conditions in the places where people live, learn, work and play affect a wide range of health risks and outcomes. Largely out of a hospital’s control, health inequities due to circumstance and resource distribution strongly impact patient outcomes.

“Analysis of clinically validated social determinants must play a larger role in how care providers approach population health,” said Josh Schoeller, vice president, Healthcare Markets, LexisNexis Risk Solutions. “To better assimilate health risks and proactively influence outcomes, we must seek out and understand the data about patients before they actually become patients.”

The LexisNexis SDOH survey revealed the following:

  • 80 percent of survey respondents try to engage individuals before they become patients.
  • 36 percent use SDOH not found in their Electronic Health Records (EHRs).
  • 42 percent say SDOH data is effective for patient engagement.
  • Still, 50 percent are not using SDOH data in patient engagement.

Care providers understand that to achieve the best possible outcomes, they must be clearly informed about population health. Studies demonstrate that while medical determinants are accountable for about 20 percent of health outcomes, SDOH account for as much as 50 percent. By turning socioeconomic data into clinically validated health attributes, providers can better manage risks and prioritize outreach, prevention and care coordination efforts.

“Providers need to look at new patient data sources beyond just what’s in the EHR,” explained Schoeller. “Information from social determinants can be clinically validated and correlated to measureable health outcomes for more effective and profitable care delivery.”

LexisNexis® Socioeconomic Health Attributes leverage more than 450 clinically validated public records attributes to give healthcare organizations a powerful perspective on social determinants of a person’s health risk. The derived insights can be ingested in the form of a score or incorporated by an analytics team to complement existing analytic models.

LexisNexis Health Care and healthsystemCIO.com’s survey received 62 responses from a C-suite audience from hospitals and health systems across the United States. Of those, all identified as being employed by a hospital and 98 percent were senior management and CIO level.
