Cosmetic and Perfume Workers May Face Phthalate Exposure Concerns

EMSL Analytical, Inc. provides environmental and product testing services to identify a wide range of occupational exposure risks.

Several months ago, an article in Chemistry World garnered the attention of countless workers involved with the sale and production of perfumes and fragrances. “Cosmetic and perfume sales staff exposed to high phthalate levels” discusses a recent Taiwanese study of phthalate levels in the air and bodies of sales clerks involved with these products.

The study found that phthalate levels in the workers’ urine were higher after they had completed their shift. Exposure to phthalates is a serious concern as many of these chemicals are suspected endocrine disruptors. In fact, some phthalates have already been restricted in certain child care articles and toys since children can be exposed to the chemicals by chewing on them.

“Phthalates are a group of chemicals used to make plastics and vinyl more flexible and harder to break,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Some phthalates are used as solvents for other materials and they are used in numerous products that most people are exposed to on a daily basis. In fact, phthalates can be found in hundreds of consumer products, in addition to cosmetics and personal care products. They may also be found in some flexible plastic and vinyl toys, shower curtains, wallpaper, vinyl mini blinds, food packaging and plastic wrap. Phthalates are also a component in some wood finishes, detergents, adhesives, plastic plumbing pipes, lubricants, medical tubing and fluid bags, insecticides, medical devices, vinyl flooring and other building materials.”

Although all of the human health effects of exposure to phthalates are not fully understood, a number of studies in recent years have begun to focus on their impact on people. To help identify their presence, EMSL Analytical, Inc. provides phthalate testing services for packaging, consumer products and from environmental and occupational settings. They have even sponsored a video that discusses phthalates that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/GFyi1BcOUkw.
