(EMAILWIRE.COM) Toronto, Canada -- Investing in Chameleon diamonds is becoming an alternate investment vehicle. So, why invest in these types of gemstones? This illusive and very fascinating diamond is taking individuals, the investment community and diamond lovers by storm. “The share awesomeness that emanates from the ability of the stone to change color under certain conditions fascinates diamonds connoisseurs, traders, investors and non-connoisseurs alike,” explains expert at Premier Diamond Group (North American) Ltd: http://premierdiamondltd.com/why-own-colored-diamonds/

The ability of chameleon diamond to change colors, like a lizard by the same name, has fascinated gemologists, traders and diamond lovers for quite some time.  It all began in 1950s at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) when the first chameleon diamond was recorded during a grading process. A gemologist at GIA was examining an unusual green diamond.  This expert studied the stone and placed it in a safe at the end of the day for later examination.  His colleague came to the lab and realized that the green diamond was gone, but there was a yellow stone in its place. After a thorough search, the green diamond was nowhere to be found. The expert later realized that the green diamond had changed its color from green to yellow.

Experts are still unable to fully explain why the change in colors occur. However, it has been, so far, ascertained that the changing of the chameleon diamond occurs under two conditions: (1) When the diamond is heated to about 150ºC, the gemstone temporarily changes its color. (2) The diamond changes color after a prolonged storage in the dark.

Many people are fascinated as to why and how the chameleon diamonds changes color, but its rarity is what makes investors to consider this mysterious gemstone an instrument for financial diversification. Many people have not seen chameleon diamonds let alone touch one.  “The chameleon diamond is extremely rare, and typically it is found in small sizes of two carats or less,” according to Tom Moses, senior vice president of laboratory and research at the GIA. However, sales at auctions houses have brought the chameleon diamonds to the public. In 2011, a chameleon diamond ring (8.8 carats) was sold by Christie’s in Hong Kong for $590,000.  Africa Gems discovered fancy dark grey chameleon diamond -- an 8.04 carat radiant-cut diamond that was worth $2,100,000. “Chameleon diamonds under 2 carats are still affordable for the average individual seeking financial diversification,” reports Jill Newman of Robb Report.

If anyone is interested in investing in Chameleon Diamonds, the investor must do some due diligence. There are many resources on chameleon diamonds published for public domain. However, Premier Diamond Group (North America) Ltd has a knowledge base and Mr. David Metcalfe for consultation. Mr. Metcalfe is “a pioneer in the branding of natural colored diamonds as a hedge against excessive market volatility brought about by speculation and government credit excesses.”
