California Company Recalls Tarragon Due to Salmonella Contamination Concerns

LA Testing provides comprehensive food testing services to identify foodborne pathogens to help prevent illnesses and costly product recalls.

Huntington Beach, CA – WEBWIRE

In October, a company out of Fremont, California announced that they were recalling packages of organic tarragon that were distributed in 21 states through retail stores and e-commerce transactions. The reason for the recall was due to the potential for Salmonella contamination in the perennial herb.

Fortunately, at the time of the announcement there had been no reports of illnesses, but the recall was initiated out of an abundance of caution. Salmonella is a type of bacteria that is frequently associated with many common foods. A food product contaminated with Salmonella can make anyone sick, but young children, the elderly and people with a weakened immune system are often most susceptible. Most people who become infected develop diarrhea, vomiting, fever, chills and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. After approximately four to seven days, most people will recover without treatment, but in severe cases, people may need to be hospitalized, and death can occur in extreme circumstances.

“People often associate Salmonella with raw eggs and poultry, but this is a clear example and a good reminder that many types of foods and raw ingredients are susceptible to contamination from this and other microbial pathogens,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “At LA Testing, we help to prevent foodborne illness outbreaks and costly product recalls by providing a comprehensive range of microbial testing services to prevent contaminated foods from reaching consumers. These services are available to food manufacturers, importers, retailers, regulators, health officials and the general public.”

LA Testing has also sponsored an educational video about Salmonella that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/EW_aOUl0cag.
