Teams with Motorola to launch service in third city this year

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – Clearwire Communications, LLC, an operating subsidiary of Clearwire Corporation, today launched its CLEAR 4G mobile Internet service in Las Vegas, Nev., making it the third Clearwire market to use wireless broadband infrastructure and devices provided by the Home & Networks Mobility business of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT). Just last month, Clearwire launched CLEAR in Atlanta, Ga., following its inaugural service deployment in Portland, Ore. in early January 2009. With CLEAR, customers can enjoy super fast mobile Internet service whether at home or on the go with Motorola’s desktop CPEi 150 and award-winning USBw 100 adaptor.

“Once again, Motorola is the end-to-end system provider for Clearwire’s revolutionary wireless Internet service, providing the network infrastructure and a choice of devices for its customers to enjoy CLEAR service while in their homes, offices, or while being mobile about town,” said Dave Wangrow, senior director, WiMAX product management, Motorola Home & Networks Mobility.

Motorola’s USBw 100 is a small wireless modem which plugs directly into a laptop computer just like a thumb drive. It provides 4G broadband connectivity while stationary or on the move. The CPEi 150 is a true plug-and-play desk top device that automatically connects to the CLEAR network and authenticates itself for easy Internet access. Both the CPEi 150 and USBw 100 are data-only devices operating in the 2.5GHz frequency band.

The Las Vegas area is served by more than 300 cell sites utilizing Motorola’s WAP 400 Diversity Access Point product. The WAP 400 uses tower top power amplifiers linked to a fiber optic cable, with the base control unit housed in a small outdoor cabinet at the bottom of the tower. This creates a very compact cell site configuration, significantly smaller than traditional cellular infrastructure products.

In addition to its WiMAX networks and devices, Motorola has been supplying Clearwire with its pre-WiMAX Expedience devices and infrastructure giving Clearwire customers in 47 markets throughout the U.S. access to wireless broadband service.
