Yara signs climate gas cooperation with Johnson Matthey

WEBWIRE

Oslo (2006-02-23): Yara International ASA is making its nitrous oxide catalyst available to the chemical industry and has signed an agreement with Johnson Matthey Plc, Noble Metals for cooperation on sales and marketing of the technology. The arrangement is exclusive, and takes effect immediately.

The technology to cut emissions of the climate gas nitrous oxide from existing nitric acid plants was developed at Yara’s Research Centre in Porsgrunn, Norway. Extensive research since early 1990’s resulted in a unique secondary high temperature catalyst with high abatement efficiency. The technology makes it possible to reduce emission levels in nitric acid plants by 70% to more than 90%. The catalyst has been installed in Yara’s own nitric acid plants in France with proven emissions reduction capability and longevity of operation, and will be installed in Yara’s nitric acid plants worldwide as part of the company’s continuous drive for clean and safe operations.

Johnson Matthey Plc, Noble Metals will market the catalyst globally to Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Joint Implementation (JI) countries as established and defined by the Kyoto Protocol. [a1]

Through the agreement, Yara’s decades of experience in the manufacture of nitric acid and Johnson Matthey’s global market leading position in the supply of catalysts to nitric acid and caprolactam operators combine to create a strong and reliable partnership for combating emissions of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide.
