The use of lead in paint has been banned since 1978, but few parents recognize the many other sources of lead that are commonly found in homes. In fact according to the EPA, “to reduce your child’s exposure to lead, get your child checked, have your home tested and fix any hazards you may have.”

Lead can sometimes be found in consumer products, such as toys and jewelry. This presents a potential serious hazard to consumers, especially to young children. Various plastics, paints and other surface coatings have historically utilized lead and other heavy metals as stabilizers. The deterioration of lead upon handling can cause a number of adverse health effects.

Homes and water systems that have lead pipes or lead solder can also introduce lead through drinking water. Many manufacturing processes also utilize lead which can then to lead dust being brought into the homes of employees on their clothing. Even lead crystal or lead-glazed pottery and porcelain can leach lead into food and liquids.

Lead is of particular concern to young children as their growing bodies can absorb more lead and their brain and nervous systems are more sensitive to the negative health effects. Children also tend to place their hands and objects in their mouths allowing for lead to enter their bodies.

“The dangers associated with lead poisoning are serious and should be understood by parents,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President at EMSL. “If not detected early, children with high levels of lead in their systems can suffer from stunted growth, learning problems, damaged nervous systems and diminished brain functions to name just a few of the dangers.”

EMSL Analytical, one of the nation’s largest environmental laboratories, has a long history of detecting the presence of lead and other heavy metals in homes and from consumer products. To learn more about lead testing please visit www.emsl.com, call (800)220-3675 or email info@emsl.com.
