Communication Server 1000 Release 6.0 Delivers Key Enhancements; Tops Competitors in Energy Efficiency

TORONTO - A new software-centric, feature-rich release of the Nortel Communication Server 1000 (CS 1000), the enterprise foundation for communications and telephony-based unified communications (UC), is now available to businesses worldwide. With this latest release, 6.0, CS 1000 provides even greater simplicity, resiliency, security, and openness. Initial results of independent comparisons of CS 1000 release 6.0 and competing products also find that the Nortel* [OTC: NRTLQ] solution is up to 40 percent more energy efficient.

Ensuring ’always-available’ communication services is a key factor for Bellevue Public Schools ** in Nebraska, but cost concerns rank high as well. “Like most education institutions, we have to work with increasingly tight budgets, so we need a communication solution that maximizes our investment and can grow with us,” said Butch McCraw, head telecom administrator, Bellevue Public Schools. “Reliability is just as important. Given our daily charge, network redundancy and survivability are critical. With release 6.0 of CS 1000, we are able to protect our network investment by centralizing all of our schools onto a single CS 1000 system, giving us great value while making our communications even more reliable and secure.”

Energy efficiency, a hallmark of many Nortel technology solutions, also makes CS 1000 release 6.0 a compelling communications platform. An initial head-to-head comparison of CS 1000E release 6.0 and competing products found the Nortel solution to be up to 40 percent more energy efficient. “During the course of a June 2009 evaluation involving the Nortel CS 1000E and Cisco 7835, Tolly found through hands-on testing that the Nortel components were more energy efficient than the Cisco components,” said Kevin Tolly, founder of The Tolly Group, a Florida based independent testing and strategic consulting organization. A detailed report on those findings is forthcoming.

“The reduction of energy usage by IT equipment reduces operating costs, reduces both power and cooling needs for the equipment and related capital expenditures, and reduces the carbon footprint of the IT operation” notes Jim Sinopoli, president of Smart-Buildings, an energy-efficient building strategy advisor. “Based on the audited results, every component of the Nortel configuration is more energy efficient than the comparable Cisco equipment.”

As part of release 6.0, CS 1000 offers a number of new features including greater centralization of functions that can further help enterprises to reduce the total cost of ownership of their network solution. For example, a new high-density services gateway, the Media Gateway 1010, centralizes the provision of communications services and applications to simplify operations across the network. Another component of release 6.0, the Unified Communications Management Solution manages CS 1000 as the network’s UC foundation and provides a framework that allows centralized management of all converged network elements. A Linux-based software solution provides simplified diagnostics and serviceability. Release 6.0 also expands CS 1000 options for COTS platforms adding the IBM x3350 and Dell R300.

The Communication Server 1000 is a software-based, full-featured IP PBX and the cornerstone of Nortel Enterprise unified communications solutions. It provides the benefits of a converged network plus advanced applications and over 750 world-class telephony features. Fully distributed over IP LAN and WAN infrastructure with built-in reliability and survivability, CS 1000 supports business-critical applications including unified messaging, customer contact center, interactive voice response, wireless VoIP and SIP/IP telephony.

Gartner Inc, the world’s leading information technology research and advisory company, has positioned Nortel in the Leader’s Quadrant of the August 2008 Corporate Telephony Magic Quadrant and the September 2008 Unified Communications Magic Quadrant .
