Honeywell 3-D Weather Radar Reaches One Million Hours of Providing More Data to Pilots on Turbulence, Storms

PARIS AIR SHOW. – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) announced today its IntuVue 3-D Advanced Weather Radar has reached approximately one million hours of proven flight time and more than 2,000 firm orders and installations. Honeywell’s IntuVue offers flight crews the ability to detect and avoid previously unforeseen turbulence, wind shears and dangerous storm activity so they can make more informed route decisions — thereby increasing passenger comfort and safety while decreasing weather-related costs due to injuries and aircraft damage.

Operators using IntuVue are experiencing 45 percent fewer turbulence-related incidents compared to aircraft equipped with conventional radars. IntuVue’s slim design and high reliability reduce operating costs by 53 percent, reduce weight by 25 percent and reduce maintenance cost by 30 percent as compared to other commercially available products.

IntuVue is the first fully automatic weather radar system certified to the FAA’s Enhanced Turbulence Detection Minimum Operation Performance Standard (MOPS) that enables pilots to see and avoid turbulence sooner. It is the only commercial radar that utilizes pulse compression for greater accuracy at longer range – a technology used previously only in military radars.

This technology enables improved in-flight decisions by providing high-resolution weather analysis tools for viewing storms in three-dimensions at up to 320 nautical miles ahead of the aircraft, which allows for optimum re-routing around or through weather.

Honeywell’s IntuVue enables better on-time performance by providing the most accurate, real-time, long-range weather data and analysis tools to support both strategic and tactical flight decisions to minimize time and fuel costs while providing passengers a safer ride. IntuVue’s design eliminates waveguides, incorporates direct drive antenna, and a solid state receiver-transmitter to provide maximum reliability and reduced maintenance and training costs.

The IntuVue family of radars are fully-automatic weather radar systems that reduce pilot workload and product training through intuitive displays, simplified operation and eliminating the need to manually tilt the antenna or manage gain requirements.

Honeywell’s IntuVue weather radar is standard equipment on the Airbus A380 and A350 as part of the ground-breaking Aircraft Environment Surveillance System. Deliveries are expected to start with the single aisle A320 family (A318, A319. A320 and A321) in the first quarter of 2010, with selection of the long range A330s and A340s, including freighters, in the first quarter of 2011.

IntuVue has been certified and flying on the Boeing 777 since 2006, and the Next-Generation 737 since mid-2008. IntuVue has more than 300,000 hours on the C-17 military transport. IntuVue has also been selected as standard equipment on the Gulfstream 650 when it enters service.
