Improves Productivity of Database Management Teams by More Than Five-Fold

ISLANDIA, N.Y. – CA (NASDAQ: CA) has named AXA Technology Services Switzerland AG as the winner of the CA IDUG (International DB2 Users Group) Award for Outstanding Work in DB2, presented at the recent North America conference in Denver.

A wholly-owned subsidiary of the AXA Group, AXA Technology Services Switzerland AG provides IT infrastructure services to AXA companies worldwide. The company was recognized for tackling a highly complex project that crossed DB2 and Oracle database environments, improving the productivity of the database management teams by more than five-fold—as measured by databases managed per database administrator—and simplifying enterprise IT management processes.

“Our goal was to reduce costs and improve service levels to customers by standardizing management of more than 80 DB2 databases that we brought in house,” said Peter Suhner, lead DB2 engineer at AXA Technology Services Switzerland AG. “The result of this initiative is a highly stable database environment that performs superbly and is very simple to maintain in a similar way for both DB2 and Oracle. This empowers us to quickly respond to shifts in business demands.”

A panel of seven judges—including the president of IDUG, four independent DB2 consultants and two CA database management experts—evaluated the submissions based on scope and complexity of challenge, technical innovation, business/organizational innovation, personal or team initiative and determination, quantitative results, and relevance of approach to other organizations.

“IDUG members deliver enormous value to their businesses and customers through innovative use of technology and great personal determination,” said Julian Stuhler, IDUG President (2008-09). “AXA’s project is a superb example where the DB2 and Oracle database management teams collaborated on an ambitious project to better employ IT staff, technologies and processes to optimize IT management to reduce costs.”

The panel also recognized three finalists:

* American Education Services, A Division of Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency, for Exemplary Customer Focus
* CenturyTel, Inc., for Exemplary Teamwork and Innovation
* Nationwide Insurance, for Exemplary Personal Drive and Initiative

“IT organizations are under tremendous pressure to cut costs while scaling up critical business services,” said Adam Frary, director, product marketing at CA. “CA is giving this award to AXA because they have clearly demonstrated that these twin goals can be met through the right combination of creative problem-solving, technical innovation, and good old-fashioned hard work.”

CA offers a comprehensive suite of software tools to help IT organizations reduce the time and effort involved in implementing and maintaining database systems.
